7 Tips for Keeping Your Pet Cool During Hot Montana Summers

Summer in Montana can be a beautiful time to enjoy the great outdoors, but it can also be quite hot for our furry friends. As pet owners, it’s important for us to take extra care to keep our pets cool and comfortable during these warm months. In this blog post, I’ll be sharing some tips and activities to help you and your pets beat the heat and make the most of summer in Montana.

How to Keep Your Pet Cool in Summer

1. Hydration is key

Just like us, pets need to stay hydrated in the summer heat. Always make sure to have fresh water available for your pets at all times. Consider investing in a pet water fountain to encourage them to drink more.

2. Create shady spots

Provide your pets with shaded areas where they can escape the sun’s rays. Set up a canopy or use a patio umbrella to create a cool spot in your backyard. If you’re out and about, bring along a portable shade tent or a collapsible pet crate with a cover.

3. Avoid hot surfaces

Remember that the pavement and sand can get scorching hot during the summer months. Before heading out for walks or hikes, test the ground with your hand. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Consider walking them during cooler times of the day or invest in protective booties.

4. Cooling mats and vests

Help your pets beat the heat by providing them with cooling mats or vests. These products are specifically designed to keep your pets cool and comfortable. Simply place a cooling mat in their favorite resting spot or dress them up in a cooling vest before heading out for a walk. Your pets will thank you!

5. Water playtime

Turn hot days into fun days by incorporating water play into your pet’s routine. Set up a kiddie pool in your backyard and let your pets splash around. You can also play with a sprinkler or fill up a water-filled toy for them to enjoy. Just make sure to supervise them at all times to ensure their safety.

6. Frozen treats

Treat your pets to some refreshing frozen treats. You can freeze some dog-friendly fruits like watermelon or make homemade ice cream using pet-safe ingredients. Not only will these treats help cool them down, but they’ll also provide some much-needed hydration.

7. Adjust exercise routines

During the summer months, it’s important to adjust your pet’s exercise routine to avoid overheating. Opt for shorter walks during cooler times of the day and engage in low-impact activities indoors. Puzzle toys and treat-dispensing toys are great options to keep your pets mentally stimulated without exerting too much physical energy.
